Jefferson County fire departments, along with the Arkansas Forestry Division, battled forest fires in the areas of Highway 54, Kilcrease Road, and the Pinewood subdivision over to the area of Ramick and Rayhan Roads earlier this week.
State Forester and Director of the Arkansas Forestry Division Joe Fox spoke with Deltaplex News about the fires, saying close to 800 acres have been burned.
Fox said that there have been more fires this year than in recent years due to dry conditions.
He said that while the investigation is not complete it is believed both fires in Jefferson County were started by people burning debris or trash.
Fox said that most Arkansan’s have done a good job of obeying burn bans, but the two Jefferson County fires show what can happen when the bans are disobeyed.
Fox said citizens will continue to see smoke in the area due to the fires burning out inside of the containment areas, and he offered some suggestions for helping to monitor for updates.
