The Miami Marlins have claimed right-handed pitcher Tyler Zuber off waivers from the New York Mets and have designated fellow right-hander Nick Nastrini for assignment, the organization announced Wednesday.
Zuber, a White Hall native, has been optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville following the move. A former standout at Arkansas State, Zuber left a lasting legacy with the Red Wolves, where he finished his collegiate career second in program history in strikeouts.
Though his recent appearances in the majors have been limited, Zuber brings valuable experience. He debuted in 2020 with the Kansas City Royals, logging his most active MLB season in 2021. That year, he appeared in 31 games, posting a 6.26 ERA. Despite the struggles, the Marlins are betting on his upside and are hopeful that a change of scenery will help him recapture the form he displayed in college and early in his pro career.
The decision to bring in Zuber led to the designation of Nick Nastrini, who was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox just over a week ago. Nastrini struggled in his lone outing for Triple-A Jacksonville, surrendering two runs, issuing four walks, and hitting three batters in just two innings of work. He has a career MLB record of 0–7 with a 7.07 ERA over nine appearances.
