The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football team suffered a tough 51–7 loss at the hands Texas Southern in Houston Saturday night at Houston Christian University.
In a game that was poised to be a defensive battle, TSU turned a three point first quarter advantage into a 27 point halftime lead. The Tigers imposed their will thanks to a punishing ground game and timely big plays. Roriyon Richardson hauled in two touchdown passes and finished with 103 yards on seven catches, asserting himself as a game-changer in the passing attack. On special teams, Donovan Jones flipped momentum when he recovered a fumble from Ellis Stewart and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown, further deepening UAPB’s hole.
Arkansas–Pine Bluff finally got on the board with 5:11 left in the fourth quarter when quarterback Christian Peters connected with Tyreke Jinks on a 5-yard touchdown pass. However, the belated score did little to change the narrative of a lopsided affair. Peters went 14-of-26 through the air for 116 yards, while the Golden Lions’ offense struggled to find consistency for most of the night. Running back Bryant Sanchez led the Golden Lions in rushing with 11 carries for 73 yards, averaging 6.6 yards per attempt. Defensively, Derron Moore finished with a team-high eight tackles.
The loss drops UAPB to 2–3 on the season and 1–1 in SWAC play, while Texas Southern improves to 2–3 overall and 2–1 in conference competition. The Golden Lions will host Westgate Christian Saturday, Oct. 11th, with kick-off scheduled for 2p.m at Simmons Bank Field.
