The Drew County Quorum Court has approved an ordinance that hopefully will help solve their ongoing trash problems.

According to the Advance Monticellonian newspaper, the county will join nine other counties in Southeast Arkansas belonging to the Southeast Arkansas Economic Development District and haul their trash to a waste to electricity recycling center at Lake Village.

The newspaper reported that once the facility is finished, it will be able to process 500 tons of household waste each day. The trash will be turned into gas that will then be used to heat water and produce steam to create electricity.

The agreement will allow Drew County, along with the other nine counties to pay a locked-in fee of $45 a ton tipping fee, with the rates remaining the same for 30 years based on reviews every five years.

When it is completed, the facility will be the first gasification plant in the United States, the newspaper said.
