The Monticello Police Department is warning citizens about scam calls from callers claiming to be a law enforcement officer asking for payment to resolve an alleged criminal matter.
The MPD stated in a release that they do not call citizens asking for them to send money for fees or fines. The especially do not ask for citizens to pay for fees or fines with wire transfers, prepaid debit cards, gift cards, or bitcoin.
The Department offers the following tips:
- Do not give any personal information such as a social security number, bank information, driver’s license number, etc.
- Do not assume the caller is who they claim to be even if Caller ID indicates that it is. Always call the agency mentioned in the call to confirm any and all information.
