A Mississippi man wanted for murder in that state was arrested last week in McGehee, according to the McGehee Dermott Times-News.

The paper identified the man as Carlos Varnell, 28, who was driving a 2021 Hyundai Elantra that Arkansas State Trooper Sr. Cpl. Mitch Grant stopped for speeding on U.S. Highway 65 north in McGehee.

A computer check of Varnell’s license showed a nationwide warrant for his arrest from Jackson, Mississippi on two counts of aggravated assault stemming from a drive-by shooting.

McGehee Police Lt. Mark Allen arrived on the scene to assist and Varnell was taken into custody. It was learned later that one of the victims of the shooting had died and Varnell’s charges had been upgraded to murder.

The newspaper reported that Varnell has waived extradition and will be returned to Mississippi to face murder charges.
