Ivan Whitfield officially began serving as Jefferson County judge Wednesday following the early retirement of former County Judge Gerald Robinson.
On his first day in office, Whitfield said he is focused on bringing county officials together and creating a more collaborative approach to local government.
His first priority is opening the county judge’s office to members of the Quorum Court and meeting individually with each justice of the peace before the court’s next meeting. Whitfield said those conversations are intended to get county leaders “on one accord,” present a united front and conduct county business in a professional manner while addressing the needs of the community.
Although improving county roads remains one of his primary goals, Whitfield noted that he first wants to evaluate the county’s road department, including its equipment, available resources and budget, before determining the best course of action. Understanding the department’s current condition, he said, is necessary before tackling the county’s road issues.
Whitfield wasted little time getting started. Shortly after arriving at the courthouse on his first day, he met with Justice of the Peace Victorino, describing the encounter as an opportunity to begin building relationships with members of the Quorum Court.
Victorino, who arrived early to welcome the new county judge, said he wanted Whitfield to know he was available to discuss any concerns and begin strategizing together. He emphasized that transparent and effective government depends on collaboration among elected officials and expressed his commitment to working alongside Whitfield as the county moves forward.
Whitfield said he hopes his administration will foster a more unified approach to county government while working with Quorum Court members to better serve Jefferson County residents.
