A former Quapaw Nation leader’s spending is being questioned after an audit shows John Berrey spending over $34 million during his 20-year tenure at the helm of the nation.  The spending includes $4 million that was paid to former University of Oklahoma and former Dallas Cowboy head coach Barry Switzer.  According to the audit, the money paid to Switzer was for him to promote the Downstream Development Authority project in Pine Bluff.

The forensic audit also reveals some transactions that are under the microscope.  The audit report says Berrey received more than $17 million paid out in bonuses and pay raises.  Berrey also made donations from the tribal coffers amounting to $10 million which is a violation of the tribal nation’s rules.  The donations include $25, 000 annually to the Razorback Foundation for the upkeep of the dugouts at Baum-Walker stadium.

One transaction that is being heavily scrutinized is an $8,000 spa visit for friends of a DDA member.
