Two cities in Southeast Arkansas have received economic development block grants to improve their wastewater systems.

According to the McGehee Dermott Times-News, Arkansas City in Desha County received $300,000 and McGehee, also in Desha County, received $299,954 through the Community Development Block Grant Program for Small Cities.

The funds for Arkansas City will go to waste treatment pond improvements while the money for McGehee will be used for Waste/Wastewater System Rehab.

To be eligible for the grants, communities must have less than 50,000 population and at least 51 percent of the persons benefiting from the programs must be of low to moderate income, or the project must meet another CDBG national objective, prevention of slum or blight, or meet an urgent need.

The two cities were among 21 in the state that received grant money.
