Eric Valteze Brooks, 50
1976-2026

Eric Valteze Brooks was born on May 1, 1976, to Janice Barbara Askew and Thelbert Lee Brooks Jr. He was also lovingly raised with the presence of his stepfather, Walter Askew.

During his childhood, Eric and his brother spent many days running, playing, kicking bottles, riding bikes, and spending time in the loving home of their grandparents. Those memories remained a meaningful part of his story.

Eric attended elementary and middle school. Although he did not complete high school, he possessed wisdom, determination, and natural ability that allowed him to hold his own with the best of them. He was an avid movie watcher and enjoyed moments that allowed him to relax, laugh, and simply be himself.

Eric was truly one of a kind. He was an undiscovered comedian who could make anyone laugh at any given moment. His jokes, laughter, and quick wit could have you laughing until you were holding your sides. He was street smart, naturally gifted, and electronically talented. From a young age, Eric enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together, always curious about how things worked.

Like many, Eric's life included difficult chapters that helped shape his character. Through those years, he found his faith, reflected on his life, and sought to restore relationships from his past. His journey was not perfect, but it was real, and it reflected growth, self-reflection, and a desire for peace.

Above all, Eric was a caring father who deeply loved his children. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with them and carried a special place in his heart for each of them. He also shared a long-time loving relationship with Yeisha Bolden.

Eric leaves to cherish his memory his children, Whitney Brooks, Journey Brooks, Jacob Brooks, and Kevon Brooks; his longtime companion, Yeisha Bolden; his sister, Tammy Straw; his brother, Thelbert Lamont Straw; his nephews, Timothy Straw, Reshad Thomas, DeAngelo Harper, and Carlos Fletcher; his niece, Ruby Straw; and a host of other loving relatives and dear friends.

Eric was preceded in death by his mother, Janice Barbara Askew; his father, Thelbert Lee Brooks Jr.; his stepfather, Walter Askew; his grandparents, Eli and Ruby Straw; his sister, Annette Yvonne Straw; and his niece, Amber Fletcher.

Eric's laughter, love, humor, and unforgettable personality will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Though he is no longer with us in body, the memories he created, the joy he brought, and the love he shared will continue to live on in the lives of those blessed to have known him.
