The UAPB Lady Lions softball team battled through a competitive SWAC weekend series against the Southern University Lady Jaguars, ultimately coming up short in the series despite a strong opening victory.
Playing at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex, UAPB opened the series with a gritty 3–2 win on Friday, showcasing timely hitting and disciplined pitching. The Lady Lions broke through in the third inning when Ariana Gonzalez delivered a clutch two-RBI double to give UAPB an early advantage.
Southern answered later in the game, trimming the deficit to one run, but UAPB responded behind the bat of Lyric Perry, who launched a solo home run in the sixth inning to extend the lead. The Lady Lions’ pitching staff held firm down the stretch, limiting Southern to just one hit in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position to secure the narrow victory.
The momentum, however, shifted on Saturday as Southern rallied back to take control of the series. The Lady Jaguars capitalized on late-game opportunities and strong relief pitching to sweep the doubleheader. Southern’s pitching staff delivered a dominant performance in the circle, holding the Lady Lions scoreless in game two (4-0), while fending off multiple scoring threats. The Lady Jags closed out the series with a 13-9 win.
Despite the series loss, UAPB showed flashes of offensive balance and resilience. In Friday’s win, all nine starters reached base safely, highlighting the team’s ability to generate production throughout the lineup.
The Lady Lions return to the diamond Friday, March 27, when they will travel to Grambling LA, to face the Lady Tigers with first pitch scheduled for 3pm.
