St Joseph, Cutter-Morning Star, and Poyen Earn Wins in Exciting Indian Classic Play

Three teams secured victories Saturday at the Indian Classic in Poyen, as St. Joseph, Cutter-Morning Star, and host Poyen each picked up wins in weekend play.

St. Joseph Rides Fast Start Past Magnet Cove

St. Joseph took early control, plating four runs in the first inning and holding on for a win over Magnet Cove. Cy Davis set the tone with a two-run triple, followed by RBI singles from Owen Coney and Xavier Stobaugh. The Bulldogs added runs in the third on a fielder’s choice and a bases-loaded walk.

Travis Jackson earned the win, allowing just two hits and one unearned run over four innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Spencer Jewett closed the game in relief. St. Joseph finished with 10 hits, with Stobaugh, Jackson, and George Heer each collecting two. Stobaugh, Heer, and Clayton Lee drove in two runs apiece. The Bulldogs stole six bases in the win.

Three Magnet Cove players recorded one hit each. St. Joseph faces Bigelow next on Monday.

Smith’s Grand Slam Sparks Cutter-Morning Star

Jacob Smith powered Cutter-Morning Star past Hampton 15-7 with three hits, including an inside-the-park grand slam in an eight-run third inning. Smith also contributed an RBI double in the first and an RBI single in the second. Brody Speers added a two-run double, and Brynden Fustin drove in a run after being hit by a pitch.

The Eagles scored four runs in the first and three in the second, highlighted by RBI hits from Smith, Ty Kelloms, and Owen Calvi. Bentley Gigerich earned the win, tossing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Speers and Kelloms each had multiple hits as the Eagles drew nine walks and stole 14 bases, playing error-free defense.

Hampton walked 10 times and stole seven bases. Caleb Evans provided the Bulldogs’ only hit and an RBI, while Blaze Smith added two RBIs. Cutter-Morning Star hosts Foreman on Monday.

Poyen Outlasts Rison in Back-and-Forth Battle

Host Poyen edged Rison 9-8 after a dramatic, lead-changing contest. With the game tied at eight in the fourth, Sutter Speer singled home the winning run. Rison took an early lead with RBI contributions from Brayden Terry and Brody Howard, but Poyen responded as Hayden Murray grounded out to score one and Jackson Ellis followed with a two-run single.

Rison regained the lead in the second with an RBI double by Noah Matheson, but Speer’s double put Poyen ahead in the third. Rison answered with a four-run fourth, including RBIs from Mason Weaver, Easton Billings, and Logan McGarity. Poyen quickly reclaimed the lead, with Murray’s double, Colt Barrett’s single, and Speer’s RBI single proving decisive.

Speer, Layton Russell, and Barrett each had two hits for Poyen. Speer and Murray drove in three runs apiece. Kaden Rushing earned the win in relief, pitching 1⅓ scoreless innings. Rison’s offense was led by Billings, Weaver, McGarity, and Matheson, while Trent Southerland reached base three times via walks.
