PINE BLUFF, Ark. — In a tightly contested Southwestern Athletic Conference showdown Saturday at H.O. Clemmons Arena, the UAPB Golden Lions came up just short, dropping a 71–67 decision to the Florida A&M Rattlers. The loss marked a tough outing at home for UAPB, who fought hard but couldn’t quite close the gap in the final minutes of play.
The Golden Lions were led by Alex Mirhosseini, who poured in a team-high 16 points and added three steals, pacing UAPB’s offensive efforts. Trevon Payton was also in double digits with 13 points, while Quion Williams delivered a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds, also contributing six assists and two steals in a standout all-around performance.
Despite forcing 16 turnovers by the Rattlers and converting those into 15 points, UAPB couldn’t overcome Florida A&M’s balanced scoring attack and timely execution. The Golden Lions committed 13 turnovers of their own, which Florida A&M capitalized on at crucial moments.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair, with UAPB battling to stay within striking distance throughout. But Florida A&M’s offensive balance and late-game poise allowed them to hold on for the 4-point victory.
UAPB will look to bounce back as the season continues, returning to the hardwood Monday, January 19, hosting Bethune-Cookman University at 5:30pm at the H.O. Clemmons Arena. Live coverage provided by Central Maloney Inc. on Deltaplex Radio’s 99.3fm The Beat.
