What began as a tense Friday night football game ended in chaos and an early whistle when a sideline brawl forced the contest between England and Drew Central to be called off.
The altercation broke out late in the game on September 5, spilling dangerously close to the England cheerleaders. In the scramble, cheerleaders risked being trampled before parents and school staff ushered them to safety.
England School District Superintendent Dr. Judy Hubbell was quick to act, ordering the cheer squad off the field and ultimately directing that the game be stopped.
“The safety of our students is, and always will be, my top priority,” Hubbell said afterward. “Their safety takes precedence over athletics, classwork, and extracurricular activities.”
The game had been heated long before the melee. According to Hubbell, tempers flared from the opening kick. Both teams saw players ejected in the first quarter, and a string of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties piled up as the night wore on.
By the time the fight erupted, Drew Central was ahead by a comfortable margin. Coaches from both sides consulted with administrators, and the decision was made to end the game early. Injured players were escorted off the field, and the England band was told to head straight to the bus to avoid further confrontation.
Hubbell said she plans to meet with coaches and review film when school resumes Tuesday to investigate what triggered the altercation.
“I am a mother and a grandmother,” she said. “When I saw our cheerleaders in immediate danger, I reacted as I would want a superintendent to respond if my child or grandchild were in a dangerous situation at a ballgame.”
In the aftermath, Hubbell praised the quick actions of parents and coaches who stepped in to calm the situation. She also urged both schools to remember the value of sportsmanship.
“This is not how anyone wants a Friday night to end,” she said.
