The Sun Belt Conference has announced that Louisiana Tech University will join its membership, following a unanimous vote by the conference’s Board of Presidents and Chancellors. Louisiana Tech is set to become a member by July 1, 2027. This move will reunite Louisiana Tech with several regional rivals, emphasizing the conference’s focus on regional alignment and competitive growth.
A press conference is scheduled to discuss this development, featuring remarks from Louisiana Tech President Dr. Jim Henderson, Athletic Director Ryan Ivey, and Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill. The press conference will be available via livestream.
Commissioner Keith Gill expressed excitement about adding Louisiana Tech to the conference, highlighting the geographical advantages and the revival of historic rivalries that will bolster the conference’s competitive profile. The Sun Belt’s membership will increase to 14 full-time institutions with this addition.
Dr. Kyle Marrero, President of Georgia Southern and Chair of the Sun Belt Board of Directors, pointed out that Louisiana Tech aligns well with the conference’s commitment to regional rivalries and geographic focus. Louisiana Tech’s athletics history includes national championships and bowl appearances, underscoring its competitive presence.
Louisiana Tech will compete in all Sun Belt-sponsored sports except women’s bowling. The move is seen as a strategic alignment that enhances opportunities for student-athletes and fans, offering a stable and competitive environment for the university’s sports programs.
