Starting in the 2027 high school baseball season, the implementation of a double first base will be mandatory for all games across the nation, aiming to improve player safety and reduce collisions at first base. This change is part of ten rule revisions proposed by the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee and approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
The double first base will feature a white portion in fair territory and a contrasting colored portion in foul territory, separated by the first base foul line. The rules specify no gap between the two halves and provide detailed guidelines on how players should interact with the base.
Batter-runners must use the colored portion on initial plays unless a fielder is in foul territory fielding a dropped third strike.
After reaching first, runners must return to the white base for pick-offs or tagging up. Interference and obstruction rules have been updated to address collisions, with batter-runners and fielders expected to use the correct portion of the base to avoid penalties.
Additionally, new limitations on defensive meetings have been introduced to streamline the game’s pace. Teams will be allowed one player-to-player meeting per defensive half-inning, with any additional meetings being denied by umpires. This aims to reduce game duration while preserving essential player communication.
Uniform and equipment rules have also been updated. Schools can display names, logos, mascots, or player names on uniforms starting in 2027, and players are prohibited from using audio or video equipment during games.
