Trevarland Foundation, established and named in honor of Wabbaseka native, Trevarland Smith, ‘Box’, who was a victim of senseless gun violence, in 2018.
The mission of Trevarland Foundation is to provide education and awareness of gun violence, prevention for our youth to reduce gun violence and community-based programs to support our communities that are impacted through positive social connections. Now, more than ever, gun violence doesn’t just affect one – it impacts the health of the community!
Trevarland Foundation will host our 2nd annual JUNETEENTH
ART IN A BOX – THE BOX PROJECT 2024
The event will be held in Wabbaseka, AR to celebrate culture centered around nature and art. The heritage of African Americans is linked closely to nature and Art in a Box will celebrate and recognize these staples of the African American family and community with specific art projects focused on culture, community, nature and outdoors for both students and adults.
Art in a Box – The Box Project is designed to connect community to nature as a way of expression and healing. By giving students and audience goers experiences to create and express themselves, they will develop art using their own individual styles. Art in a Box will be labeled for each theme and all ages.
Trevarland Foundation’s Art in a Box – The Box Project will be held on Saturday, June 15th, from 12:00pm – 3:00pm, in the Wabbaseka Community Center and Park. The event will include art, food, games, 3 on 3 basketball and will wrap up with a bubble release in memory of those lost to gun violence. This is a FREE public/community event.
Trevarland Foundation Juneteenth Art in a Box – The Box Project is sponsored in part by the Arkansas Arts Council, the City of Wabbaseka and Trevarland Foundation. We will also leverage art students from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to assist with instruction.
Wyndolyn Smith Adams, executive director and founder for Trevarland Foundation, said when a community loses a loved one due to gun violence, it affects the health of the community. Communities that heal together will transform and grow stronger together. So, our goal is to help create environmental changes that will live on.
The event will end with a tribute to Trevarland Smith ‘Box’ with a bubble release in memory of his 6-year anniversary, which is June 22nd. It is our hope that this event is a step in the right direction to raise awareness and deter senseless gun violence.
