PINE BLUFF, AR — Maya Peat grabbed 10 rebounds and Khadijah Brown added 10 more, and the UAPB women’s basketball team beat the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats 73-56 at home Monday.

Peat and Brown’s fantastic rebounding performances led the Lady Lions (7-8, 4-2 SWAC) in the contest. Peat tacked on four points and Brown added 12 points, two steals, and six blocks. Sade Hudson also helped out with 14 points and five steals.

Led by Peat’s four offensive rebounds, UAPB did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.

UAPB’s defense held Bethune-Cookman to only 37.3 percent shooting from the field.

Head coach Dawn Thornton was pleased with the win, but it was the defensive performance that really set the tone for the Lady Lions victory on Monday night.

“We’re capable of scoring points, but we also have to make stops,” Thornton said. “It doesn’t matter how many shots go in for you, the defense has to come up with some stops to have a chance at winning. Khadijah loves to impact a shot with a block. She had six blocks tonight, and I was very pleased with her effort to lead this team, defensively.”
