UAPB Volleyball Welcomes Grambling To Open Conference Play

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff will host Grambling State on Monday, Sept. 27th at 6:30 p.m. to begin conference play.

The Lady Lions are coming off a win against Talladega College last week, sweeping them 3-0.

UAPB has won three of the last four meetings against Grambling State, including a 3-0 sweep the last time the two teams met in the spring.

Through non-conference play, freshman Zykia Jones leads the Lady Lions in kills with 99, followed by reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference player of the year Zyonn Smith with 60 kills.

Nikole Akamine has tallied 208 assists to lead UAPB, and Vanessa Collins follows with 159 assists on the season.

Leading the team in digs and ranking second in the conference is Nyah Ellis, who has 213 digs through non-conference play.

Kori Diego leads the conference in with 42 blocks to pace the Lady Lions on the defensive side.

UAPB Cross Country Secure Medaling Spots at the Lois Davis Invitational

MAGNOLIA, AR – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff cross country team had a successful weekend at the 2021 Lois Davis Invitational.

The women’s team placed in the top three in the women’s 5000-meter run, falling short of just three points from second place. UAPB finished in third place with a total of 79 points.

Sophomore Zadie St. Louis finished in the highest place for UAPB. St. Louis would finish in sixth place with a time of 20:31.9 seconds, falling 1:16 short of a first-place victory. St. Louis would also contribute six points to the team’s score total.

As for the men’s side, the men’s team clinched second place in the men’s 8000-meter run, finishing with 57 points but falling short of first place by 37 points.

Junior Baron Freeman finished in third place with 26:30.4 seconds, falling 1:09.9 seconds behind from first place. Baron’s average mile time was 5:20. Freeman added three points to the team total.

Freshman Terrance Johnson finished in fifth place, clocking 27:06.4 seconds with an average mile time of 5:27. Johnson added five points to the total.

“I was proud of how we performed, but we still have a lot to get better on, which will happen in practice,” said UAPB head coach Christopher McCoy about his team’s performance.

UAPB Soccer Loses Battle Against Houston

HOUSTON, TX – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff soccer team lost their last non-conference game in Houston, TX, against the Houston Cougars with a final score of (8-1), Friday night at Carl Lewis International Complex.

The Lady Lions got off to a sluggish start against the Lady Cougars offensively.

GK Kailey Wehrmann, however, kept things in line defensively for UAPB with three saves, keeping the first half close with a halftime score of 2-0.

Wehrmann continued to guard the UAPB goal to earn two additional saves in the second half, finishing the contest with five saves.

Not giving in, UAPB got one in the back of the net after a center-right shot from freshman Erin Fite at 79:50 to get on the board.

The Lady Lions gave their all in the final stretch but fell short, suffering a loss with a final score of (8-1).

“We battled and followed the game plan, and I’m proud of them for that,” said UAPB head coach Erik Solberg about his team.
