A $25,000 bond was set Tuesday for a Pine Bluff man previously convicted of felonies after police found a shotgun in the trunk of the man’s car Sunday.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Derrick Smith, 48, with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The court hearing was held without Smith because he was described by jail personnel as “being too combative.”

Deputy Prosecutor Beth Carson told the court that police were sent to Saracen Drive where witnesses said a man was there with a shotgun in his hands.

Carson said a records check showed that Smith had prior felony convictions.

The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent Smith and he is due back in court Aug. 3.
