Earlier this week, Governor Sarah Sanders signed legislation that, among other things, sets aside money to build additional prison space.

Appearing on the Oldies 1013 morning show Wednesday, Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr. was asked about the legislation.

The legislation also requires that people convicted of certain violent felonies serve 100 percent of their sentence as opposed to the current practice which requires them to serve far less time. Woods said criminals know that and are not concerned when they are sentenced to state prison, calling it “sit down for a couple of years, then getting out and doing the same thing all over again.”

He went on to say that because of the number of violent felons being held in county jails, there is no room to hold people accused of misdemeanors but when the new prison or prisons open, that could change.
