Watson Chapel School Superintendent Dr. Jerry Guess issued a letter to parents on Wednesday speaking of students who are struggling with academics and attendance while using the virtual learning method.

Dr. Guess states in his letter that many virtual students are “on a course for failure at semester”. Additionally, Guess states that there are “many students who will have FINS petitions filed with the Juvenile Court due to violation of attendance rules.”

Dr. Guess’ entire letter is included below.

Parents of Virtual Students:

Many of the students engaged in virtual learning are doing well. The students are logging in, engaging in instruction, doing homework and submitting it and completing evaluations. However, many of the virtual students continue to struggle. We have many, many students who are virtual who are on a course for failure at semester. We have many, many students who will have FINS petitions filed with the Juvenile Court due to violation of attendance rules.

Principals, or their designees, are contacting parents of students who are at risk of failure of a grade level or multiple subjects. We are offering parents help improving their performance working with their students. I will continue to encourage parents to return their students to on site instruction if you, the parents, cannot take responsibility for instruction at home. I truly believe teachers are offering successful virtual instruction, as evidenced by students who are doing well. However, we have a lot of parents who just are not proficient in the skills necessary to teach their students at home. Let me hastily add that I would not assume the responsibility to teach my grandchildren at home!

If your child is performing poorly, I strongly encourage you to contact your child’s principal and get your student back on site so we can improve your child’s grades before it is too late!
