The Watson Chapel School District Board of Directors met on Monday, August 9, and discussed several important topics on their agenda such as mask enforcement, new employment, and analytics of the test scores from the STAR and ACT Aspire tests.

STAR and ACT Aspire tests gauge student aptitude in the areas of math, science, reading, and English. Tests are typically given during the spring semester and student participation is mandatory.

The Ready for Learning Committee analyzed the data from the 2020-2021 academic year and determined scores for the entire district were below the desired levels. The committee will use the data to prepare interventions for students in subject areas where they need the most assistance during the upcoming school year.

A resolution by Watson Chapel superintendent Dr. Andrew Curry was proposed to allow the enforcement of masks mandates if necessary. All board members present approved the resolution. Curry explained to Deltaplex what the resolution meant as well as the district’s expectations.

The district also has been working on an HVAC project to install new air conditioning units with the ESSER funds they received. Curry talked about this project and their decision to hire an architect.

The board’s last important discussion addressed their search to hire new employees for the 2021-2022 school year including, a Gifted and Talented position, special education paraprofessional positions, and a few teacher positions. Those that may be interested can view and apply for those positions on their website.

This meeting was the last of the summer before students’ first day of school which is on Monday, August 16th.
