Following its digital premiere last December, Chris Cornell‘s posthumous covers album No One Sings Like You Anymore is now available on physical formats. The collection, which was released by Chris’ widow, Vicky Cornell, and their children Toni and Christopher, features the late Soundgarden frontman’s unique versions of songs recorded by artists including Guns N’ Roses, John Lennon, Janis Joplin and Sinéad O’Connor.
Vicky tells ABC Audio that Chris’ cover of Lennon’s 1980 tune “Watching the Wheels” — which the late Beatles legend wrote about his time at home with his family after taking a hiatus from the music industry in the mid-to-late ’70s — is among the most personally meaningful songs on the record.
“Chris was a huge fan…of The Beatles…and John Lennon, huge, huge fan,” Vicky says. “[The song’s] just about self-destructive behavior, making a choice and suddenly your entire world is your family, While Chris was still on the road, our family was still on the road. So that was that kind of touching, sort of personal meaning.”
Vicky adds that another one of her favorites is Chris’ version of “Showdown,” by Electric Light Orchestra.
“The way Chris sings this one, I’d make him sing it to me all the time,” she shares. “He gives this super sexy performance of it.”
No One Sings Like You Anymore was recorded in 2016, and was sequenced, produced and mastered prior to Chris’ death in 2017. It’s his last fully completed studio album.
