Pine Bluff, AR — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday against Grambling State at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.  The Lady Lions dropped game one 14-1 and game two 6-4.

Game 1: GSU 14 UAPB 1 

At the top of the first inning, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game. The Lady Lions responded quickly at the bottom of the inning with Alyssa Wesley who tripled to right field and scored off an RBI from Shanice Akins to cut the lead to one (2-1). 

The game continued to progress quickly as Grambling St. added a third run in the top of the second inning leading UAPB 3-1. Neither team gained another run until the top of the fourth with the Lady Tigers added 11 runs, holding their lead to clinch game one.

Wesley led the Lady Lions at the plate finishing the game 1-for-2. 

 

Game 2:GSU 6 UAPB 4

Underway in game two at the top of the first, the Lady Tigers jumped out to an early three-run lead (3-0). As the game progressed with no runs until the bottom of the third, Jasmine Carlson singled to the center and advanced to first base. Carlson stole second base with an explosive head-first slide for the Lady Lions to add the first run of the game after a single to center field RBI by Leslie Arreola.

Shanice Akins advanced from second base to add another run for the Lady Lions after a single to center field RBI from Anne Gerwitz to close out the second inning 3-2. 

At the bottom of the third inning, Wesley continued to have an explosive game after being walked and then stole second base. The Lady Tigers answered back with a run in the top of the fourth inning leading 4-2. Akins singled to center field scoring Wesley and Carlson for the Lady Lions at the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 4-4. . 

In the top of the seventh, Grambling St. added two more runs to take a 6-4 lead over UAPB ultimately taking game two.

Carlson led the Lady Lions at the plate going 2-for-3, followed by Akins going 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Gerwitz going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Both teams will be back in action Monday at 1 p.m. at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.
