UAPB FOOTBALL: Golden Lions Fall to Texas Southern

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas —Texas Southern rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to beat UAPB 31-23 on Saturday afternoon.

B J Curry paced the Golden Lions rushing attack by accumulating 94 yards over the course of the game. Za’Marion Webber also added nine yards on the ground, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

JaVonnie Gibson reeled in four catches for 55 yards and one score.

Abdulbasit Osholake showed out for the UAPB defense, totaling one interception. Amyrion Mingo added three tackles and one interception and Elijah Jenkins had four tackles, 3.0 TFL, and one sack in the loss.

The Golden Lions forced two turnovers in Saturday’s contest, with UAPB turning those takeaways into 10 points. The UAPB offense did a good job extending drives, converting on 56.2 percent of third-down attempts.

Defensively, UAPB held up fairly well against the Texas Southern passing attack, holding the Tigers to 169 yards through the air. The Golden Lions defense disrupted the Texas Southern passing game on the way to grabbing two interceptions.

Texas Southern scored first to take a 7-7 lead, but UAPB responded with :00 remaining in the second quarter to go up 10-7.Texas Southern then tied things at 10-10 before the Golden Lions responded with a 35-yard field goal from to retake the lead at 13-10.

Texas Southern fought back to take a 24-13 lead before UAPB put a field goal on the board to close the gap with 12:22 remaining in the fourth quarter and make it a 24-16 game. Texas Southern scored to increase its lead to 31-16 before the Golden Lions scored again to close the gap and make it a 31-23 game. Neither team scored again in the game.
