UAPB Women’s Hoops Takes Down Texas A&M-Texarkana 63-38 in Home Opener; First Win In the Leak Era
PINE BLUFF, AR — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team forced 34 Texas A&M-Texarkana turnovers en route to a 63-38 victory against the Eagles at home Monday.
Jailah Pelly led the Golden Lions with 18 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Jazmyn Sostand tacked on seven points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocks from the bench and Nadiyah Byard helped out with seven points and two blocks.
UAPB out-rebounded Texas A&M-Texarkana 43-35 in Monday’s game, led by Pelly’s nine boards. The Golden Lions also pulled down 20 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points.
UAPB’s defense held Texas A&M-Texarkana to only 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-5, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 3:53 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Empress Roberts, to tie the game at 10, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 10 points.
The game stayed tied until UAPB went on a 5-0 run to take a 19-14 lead. The Golden Lions proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 28-22 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB forced 10 Texas A&M-Texarkana turnovers in the period and turned them into 10 points.
UAPB continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Uriah Jennings to expand its lead further to 42-31 with 31 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Golden Lions still entered the fourth quarter with a 42-33 edge. UAPB’s bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team’s 14 third-quarter points.
UAPB kept widening that lead, expanding it to 54-38 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Pelly’s layup, to grow the lead to 63-38 with two seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.
