UAPB Women’s Hoops Lady Lions: Fall Late To Alabama State On The Road

Montgomery, AL — Zaay Green collected 31 points and Kaila Walker added 21, but the UAPB women’s basketball team fell to the Alabama State Lady Hornets 90-81 on the road Saturday.

The Lady Lions (10-12, 6-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Green, who had 31 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Walker tacked on 21 points off of the bench and Maya Peat chipped in as well with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

UAPB forced 20 Alabama State turnovers. The Lady Lions turned those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Green’s three steals led the way for UAPB.

How It Happened

UAPB started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a three from Green, to take an early lead with 7:12 left in the first quarter. The Lady Lions then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 21-20.

Alabama State kept adding to that lead, building a 41-34 advantage before UAPB went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Walker, to tie the game at 41. Alabama State then took control, putting the Lady Lions at a 44-43 disadvantage heading into halftime.

UAPB’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Lions faced a 65-61 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. UAPB’s bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as reserves totaled 12 of the team’s 18 third-quarter points.

UAPB could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 90-81. UAPB took advantage of eight Alabama State turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
