UAPB Women’s Hoops: Green’s Triple-Double Lifts Lady Lions Over Alcorn State

PINE BLUFF, AR — Zaay Green went off for a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the UAPB women’s basketball team past the Alcorn State Lady Braves 77-57 at home Saturday.

The Lady Lions (10-10, 6-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Green, who notched a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Sade Hudson added 10 points and five assists and Kaila Walker helped out with 10 points and two steals.

Khadijah Brown pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into nine second chance points.

UAPB’s defense held Alcorn State to only 40 percent shooting from the field.

How It Happened

UAPB started out the scoring by going on a 13-0 run, culminating in a three from Green, to take an early lead with 6:51 left in the first quarter. The Lady Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 20-13 advantage. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.

UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 4:27 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 30-19. The Lady Braves cut into that lead, but the Lady Lions still enjoyed a 32-26 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 12 points close to the basket.

UAPB surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 34-34 they went on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Green, to grab a 44-34 lead with 6:15 to go in the third. The Lady Lions held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 57-47 edge. UAPB took advantage of six Alcorn State turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.

UAPB kept widening that lead, expanding it to 62-51 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Shekinah Rachel’s jumper, to grow the lead to 68-51 with 3:36 to go in the contest. The Lady Lions kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 77-57 win. UAPB took advantage of five Alcorn State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
