UAPB Women’s Hoops Defeats Mississippi Valley State On Senior Night

PINE BLUFF, AR — Zaay Green went off for a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the UAPB women’s basketball team over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes 78-64 at home Saturday.

The Lady Lions had four players score in double figures, led by Maya Peat, who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Tyeisha Juhan added 17 points and Green helped out with a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

UAPB shared the ball well in Saturday’s game, racking up 24 assists on 32 made field goals. Green’s 10 assists led the Lady Lions and Joyce Kennerson also chipped in with eight assists of her own.

UAPB’s defense held Mississippi Valley State to only 29.4 percent shooting from the field, including 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Lady Lions also limited Mikayla Etienne to 3-of-16 shooting and 10 points in the game.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 5-2 advantage, UAPB went on a 7-0 run with 8:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Peat, to increase its lead to 12-2. The Lady Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 23-14 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 23 points close to the basket.

UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 8:55 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kaila Walker, to increase its lead to 28-17. The Delta Devilettes cut into that lead, but the Lady Lions still enjoyed a 39-31 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

UAPB continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Green, to expand its lead further to 45-34 with 8:13 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Lady Lions added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 57-43 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.

UAPB kept widening that lead, expanding it to 70-52 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 76-52 with 2:50 to go in the contest. The Delta Devilettes narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 78-64 win. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.
