UAPB Women’s Hoop Close Out The Regular Season With Win Over Alcorn State

LORMAN, MS – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team had five Lady Lions to score in double figures to help secure a win over Alcorn State 64-41 in the final game of the regular season.

Shekinah Rachel led the way with 15 points of the bench shooting 75 percent from the field. Tyiesha Juhan scored 13 points, Maya Peat added 12 points, and Kaila Walker and Joyce Kennerson both added 10 points a piece to contribute to a win for UAPB.

The Lady Lions started the game leading 8-2 after four points by Maya Peat to pace the run. Jumping out to a 15-5 lead at the end of the opening quarter, Kennerson knocked down a triple early in the second period to give UAPB a 20-9 lead.

Alcorn came as close as 22-16 at the 4:36 mark, but the Lady Lions went on a 15-7 run to close out the quarter holding a 37-23 lead at halftime.

UAPB held Alcorn to six third quarter points while scoring 14 to give them some cushion with a 51-29 lead at the start of the fourth. Rachel would then score seven of her 15 total points in the final quarter to help close out the game for the Lady Lions in the win.

UAPB closes out the year with a .500 winning percentage in conference play for the first time under head coach Dawn Thornton, and the first time since 2017.

The Lady Lions will begin postseason play on Wednesday, Jan. 9th as the No. 8 seed facing No. 1 seed Jackson State at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
