UAPB Women Hoops Loses At Texas Southern
HOUSTON – Maya Peat collected a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team fell to the Texas Southern Lady Tigers 75-66 on the road Thursday.
The Lady Lions (2-17, 1-12 SWAC) had three players score in double figures, led by Peat, who had her second straight double-double with a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kaila Walker tacked on 15 points and six assists and Khadijah Brown chipped in as well with 13 points and six rebounds.
The UAPB offense was very productive from deep, making six threes on 19 attempts. Tyler Pyburn was the most prolific shooter for the Lady Lions, draining two treys in the contest.
The UAPB defense was a problem in Thursday’s game, forcing 17 Texas Southern turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Pyburn led the way individually for the Lady Lions with two steals.
After falling behind 11-8, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 4:29 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Takaylyn Busby, to take a 13-11 lead. The Lady Lions then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 22-17.
Texas Southern kept adding to that lead, building a 34-25 advantage before UAPB went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Peat, to narrow its deficit to 34-32. Texas Southern responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Lions trailing 40-32 heading into halftime.
UAPB came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 40-37 with 9:09 to go in the third. Texas Southern countered and stretched its lead to 52-47 heading into the fourth.
The Golden Lions battled back in the final stanza, cutting the margin to 66-63 on a three-pointer by Pyburn but could get no closer.
