UAPB Women Hoops: Lady Lions Bounce Back In Win Over Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, MS — The UAPB women’s basketball team out-rebounded the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes 49-36 on the way to a 75-63 win on the road Saturday.

The Lady Lions (9-10, 5-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Takaylyn Busby, who had 20 points. Sade Hudson added 17 points as a reserve and Zaay Green helped out with 13 points, eight rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals.

Led by Maya Peat’s three offensive rebounds, UAPB did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.

The UAPB defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday’s game, forcing 17 Mississippi Valley State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Green’s four steals led the way individually for the Lady Lions.

 

How It Happened

UAPB started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a three from Kennerson, to take an early lead with 8:47 left in the first quarter. The Lady Lions then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 19-11 advantage. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 8:05 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Khadijah Brown , to increase its lead to 25-11. The Delta Devilettes cut into that lead, but the Lady Lions still enjoyed a 36-23 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.

After intermission, UAPB held on to its advantage and owned a 46-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.

UAPB kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 75-60 with five seconds to go in the contest. The Delta Devilettes narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 75-63 win. UAPB fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 29 points.
