UAPB Women Hoops Fall To Southern On The Road

BATON ROUGE, LA —The UAPB women’s basketball team got a 26-point performance from the bench, but fell 78-64 to the Southern Lady Jaguars on the road Saturday.

The Lady Lions (8-9, 4-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Joyce Kennerson, who had 12 points and four assists. Maya Peat added 10 points and nine rebounds and Sade Hudson added seven points, four assists and two steals.

The UAPB defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday’s game, forcing 22 Southern turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Tyeisha Juhan led the way individually for the Lady Lions with three steals.

How It Happened

UAPB kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 18-15.

Southern kept adding to that lead, building a 23-15 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 23-20. Southern responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Lions trailing 34-24 heading into halftime.

Southern continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 39-26 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 39-31 with 5:20 to go in the third. Southern countered and stretched its lead to 56-40 heading into the fourth. UAPB’s bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 10 of the team’s 16 third-quarter points.

Southern kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-47 advantage before UAPB went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Tyler Pyburn’s three, to shrink the deficit to 66-53 with 4:43 to go in the contest. Southern responded and outscored the Lady Lions the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 78-64. UAPB took advantage of five Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of those takeaways.
