UAPB Women Hoops Fall Late to Gardner-Webb At Cal Invitational

BERKELEY, CA – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team held Gardner-Webb to just 13.3 percent from deep in a 2-for-15 shooting performance, but fell 81-71 to the Runnin’ Bulldogs at the Raise The B.A.R. Invitational on Sunday.

The Lady Lions (1-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Markisha Body, who had 11 points. Jelissa Reese added 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals and Takalyn Busby added nine points.

Maya Peat pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up plenty of second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 18-12, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 3:31 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Kourtney Rittenberry, to narrow its deficit to 18-17. Gardner-Webb answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Lady Lions down 26-21 entering the second quarter.

The Lady Lions fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 42-40 by the time halftime rolled around.

UAPB’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Lions faced a 65-55 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.

UAPB could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 81-71. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.
