UAPB Women Hoops Drops Heartbreaker To Alabama State On The Road

Montgomery, AL – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team got a 26-point performance from the bench, but fell 72-63 to the Alabama State Lady Hornets on the road Wednesday.

The Lady Lions had two players score in double figures, led by Mya Peat, who notched a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Jelissa Reese tacked on 12 points and three steals and Coriah Beck added nine points and six rebounds.

Peat pulled down eight offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 20 boards and turning them into 20 second chance points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-6, UAPB went on a 10-0 run with 4:20 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Peat, to take a 16-9 lead. The Lady Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-15 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 16 points close to the basket.

Alabama State rallied to take a 36-31 lead before UAPB went on a 5-0 run starting at the 1:21 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Tia Morgan, to tie the game at 36. Alabama State then took control, putting the Lady Lions at a 39-36 disadvantage heading into halftime.

UAPB’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Lions faced a 59-52 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. UAPB’s bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team’s 16 third-quarter points.

UAPB could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 72-63. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
