UAPB Women Hoops Bounce Back In Home Win Over Texas Southern 89-71

PINE BLUFF, AR – Maya Peat grabbed 12 rebounds and Kourtney Rittenberry added 11 more, and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team took down the Texas Southern Lady Tigers 89-71 at home Saturday.

Peat and Rittenberry’s fantastic rebounding performances led the Lady Lions in the contest. Peat tacked on 19 points and Rittenberry added six points, three assists, and three steals. Jelissa Reese also helped out with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists.

UAPB shared the ball well in Saturday’s game, racking up 24 assists on 31 made field goals. Individually, Coriah Beck dished out the most for the Lady Lions with seven assists.

UAPB forced 15 Texas Southern turnovers. The Lady Lions turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Rittenberry led the way individually with three steals.

How It Happened

After playing to a 4-4 tie early in the game, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 6:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Maori Davenport, to take a 9-4 lead. The Lady Lions then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 23-18 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 23 points close to the basket.

UAPB built that first quarter lead to 28-22 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 6:19 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Takalyn Busby, to increase its lead to 36-22. The Lady Tigers cut into that lead, but the Lady Lions still enjoyed a 38-31 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 15 points.

UAPB wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 9-0 run to expand its lead further to 47-31 with 7:49 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Lady Lions added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 61-41 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.

UAPB kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 83-62 with 2:48 to go in the contest. The Lady Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 89-71 win.
