UAPB Volleyball has Record Setting Day In Inaugural Tournament

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s volleyball team dominated the first annual “Roar Classic” at UAPB’s HPER Complex inside the H.O. Clemmons Arena. The tournament featured, along with UAPB, the University of Arkansas at Monticello and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

The Lady Lions faced UAM in the first match, sweeping the Cotton Blossoms 25-21, 225-10, and 25-14. Haley Gomez led the way in kills with 8, followed Zyonn Smith’s 7 kills while teammate Kory Diego added 6. Gomez and Diego contributed 3 blocks and Smith posted a game high 17 digs.

The Lady Lions had a record-setting day breaking the record for most consecutive home wins in school history with six straight victories at H.O. Clemmons Arena.

UAPB continued their streak with a win over UAFS 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16). Smith led with a game high 12 kills versus Fort Smith, while Gomez had a 9 kill/9 block performance. Nyah Ellis finished with a team leading 22 digs, and Nicole Akamine led UAPB with 14 assist.

UAPB (11-13/7-1) is currently ranked 2nd in the SWAC behind defending champion Jackson State.

The Lady Lions will be back in action on the road to Grambling, LA for the SWAC Cluster second round Saturday, October 30th, when they will take on Bethune-Cookman at 1p.m.
