UAPB Volleyball Defeat Southern On The Road 3-2 In SWAC Opener

BATON ROUGE, LA — Starvoula Papazoglou and Zykia Jones each registered double-doubles to help power the UAPB volleyball team to a 3-2 victory (25-27, 25-19, 25-8, 15-25, 15-9) against the Southern Lady Jaguars Sunday on the road at Seymour Gymnasium.

The Lady Lions were led by double-doubles from both Papazoglou, who had 14 kills and 14 digs, and Jones, who had 15 kills and 14 digs. Fernanda Spengler also added 11 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Tawyne King chipped in for with 11 digs to go with five blocks from Laila Fortson.

How It Happened

SET 1 | In spite of an impressive serving effort, the Lady Lions fell in set one 27-25. UAPB notched five aces in the set loss.

SET 2 | UAPB evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 victory in set two. The Lady Lions never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that showcased two lead changes before UAPB took over the lead.

SET 3 | UAPB grabbed another win in the third set to make it a 2-1 match. The Lady Lions took control of the set early when the score was 4-3 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-8. UAPB ended on a strong note, opening up its biggest lead of the stanza, 17 points, to finish off the set. The UAPB offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. UAPB’s front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Southern attacks in the stanza.

SET 4 | UAPB couldn’t keep the win streak alive, as the Lady Jaguars forced a fifth set with a 25-15 fourth-set win. The Lady Lions dropped the first point and never took the lead before falling in the set.

SET 5 | UAPB took a two sets to one lead and held off Southern’s comeback attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-9 and the match 3-2. The Lady Lions took set five thanks to a strong performance on the attacking side. UAPB registered a .412 attack percentage with nine kills in the set win.

The Lady Lions ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. UAPB also supplemented their offense with three aces in the final set.
