UAPB Volleyball Begins Regular Season Preparation
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball returned to the H.O. Clemmons Arena on Monday, holding its first practice of the 2019 season under first-year head coach Chelsey Lucas.
The Lady Lions had two training sessions to open the camp, with one morning and one in the evening. With their first invitational tournament in New Orleans Aug. 30-31.
“For as the first day of practice, it was very competitive, but more chemistry and bonding as a team,” Lucas said. “I was very pleased with the ladies coming from different programs, but we gel so well overall.”
“I’m looking forward to the rest of the fall camp, because our energy was good, and it set the tone for every other day. We made some mistakes, but there are some small things that we can clean up and once we make those corrections, we will be ok.”
With 14 newcomers on the 2019 roster, the Lady Lions will have new faces to get acclimated to Pine Bluff. There are, however, two returnees to help with that including All-SWAC First Team outside hitter senior Kendalle Howard. Howard led the Lady Lions, averaging 3.4 points per set in 2018 and was first on the team in kills with a total of 264 and 2.97 per set.
Haley Gomez will also be a key piece for the Lady Lions. Gomez played in 29 matches this season for the Lady Lions. Gomez was second on the team with a total of 245 kills for the season, averaged 2.97 per game. Gomez posted a career effort in UAPB’s win over Prairie View with 15 kills and 15 outings, both represent collegiate bests for a freshman. Gomez hit .255 for the Lady Lions in three matches earlier in the season, posting 29 kills, five service aces and five total blocks.
