The Lady Lion’s volleyball team won 2 out of 3 in the SWAC Cluster One in Jackson, MS over the weekend. UAPB swept Alabama A&M 24-19, 26-13, and 25-9 in the opening round. Kori Diego led the charge with 10 kills and 4 blocks, followed by Zakia Jones with 7 kills and an ace, while Zyon Smith added 6 kills an ace and a block.

The Lady Lions dropped the second match to Jackson State 3-1 by the scores of 23-25, 13-25, winning the third set 25-14, and falling in the final set 19-25. Zyon Smith posted 10 kills 4 aces and a block, while teammates Destiny Thomas and Kori Diego added 8 kills in the loss.

UAPB closed out the tournament with a sweep of Mississippi Valley State University 25-14, 25-17, 25-17. Zykia Jones and Destiny Thomas each had seven kills, with Jones adding two aces and a block. Haley Gomez contributed to the win with 6 kills 4 aces and 4 blocks. Vanessa Collins led the Lady Lions in assist with 15 while Zyon Smith paced UAPB in digs with 14.

The Ladies will be back in action on Oct. 17th, when they will travel to Houston, Texas to take on Tigers in a SWAC match at 5p.m.

 

UAPB Soccer Fall to Texas Southern

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff soccer dropped a road conference match 3-1 to the Texas Southern Tigers.

The Lady Lions struck first with a goal by Natalie Freeman at the 24-minute mark to take 1-0 lead. Both teams defended their end of the pitch, as neither team would score again for the remainder of the half leaving the Lady Lions with an 1-0 lead.

TSU would answer at the 58-minute mark in the second half to even the score at 1-1 and would take the lead moments later on a Hayden McMillian goal at the 67-minute mark. The Lady Tigers would clinched the match with their third goal of the half.

Natalie Freeman led UAPB with a score and three shots on goal.

The Lady Lions return home to take on Alabama A&M on Friday, October 15th, for Senior Day at Pumphrey Stadium. Game time is set for 4p.m.

 

UAPB Men Cross Country Wraps Up Meet At Watson Collegiate Open

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men’s cross country team finished in 11th place overall out of 22 teams in the 8k race at the Watson Collegiate Open Invitational meeting this weekend on the Choctaw Trails.

Freshman Terrance Johnson posted a time of 27:11.9 finishing 39th out of 170 runners. Rio Williams, also a freshman, placed 49th with a time of 27:40.0, followed by junior Tarik Xaiver with a time of 28:07.4 for 68th place. 

The Golden Lions will compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship meet beginning Monday, October 18th, in Clinton, Mississippi.
