UAPB Softball Dominates Langston In Doubleheader

PINE BLUFF, Arkanas —  The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions swept Langston University in a non-conference series 9-1 and 16-8, Tuesday evening at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.

Danika Bryant dominated game one, fanning 10 Langston hitters over five innings of work to help propel the UAPB Lady Lions over the Lions 9-1.

In addition to her 10 strikeouts, Bryant went five innings, giving up one run on two hits and walking seven for UAPB.

Desiree Bumpers led the way offensively for the Lady Lions, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with two walks and an RBI. Gabriella Belyeu put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Freshman Jasmine Carlson also contributed, going 1-for-2 for UAPB with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lady Lions put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Bumpers came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB and get them on the board.

After the Lions rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Lady Lions came back to retake the lead in the third inning. The UAPB offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Belyeu, which brought the Lady Lions lead to 7-1.

UAPB kept Langston scoreless before expanding their lead to 8-1 the following inning.

GAME 2 | UAPB 16, Langston 8

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas — Game two was a tough day for Langston pitchers, as the Lady Lions put up 16 runs en route to a 16-8 victory over the Lions in game two.

Sydney Green picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UAPB. The right-hander went 1.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing no walks and striking out two.

Shalin Charles led the way offensively for the Lady Lions, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Justice Walton compiled a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk and two RBI. Jasmine Carlson also chipped in, going 1-for-2 for UAPB with a walk and three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lady Lions were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. UAPB plated two runs when Charles left the yard with Jazlyn Gomez aboard.

The score stayed at 2-2 until the third inning, when the Lady Lions put runs on the scoreboard once again. UAPB scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Carlson, which brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Lady Lions.

UAPB’s lead had evaporated by the time the fourth inning arrived and turned into an 8-5 Langston advantage, when the Lady Lions re-took control at 13-8. The Lady Lions bats heated up in the inning, scoring eight runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Gomez.

UAPB held the Lions without a run before their offense got back in action the next inning. Highlighted by a run-scoring double off the bat of freshman Kaitlyn Neely, the Lady Lions put up a three spot, bringing the UAPB advantage to 16-8. The score remained 16-8 for the rest of the game, as the Lady Lions coasted to the win.

The Lady Lions will be back in action against Grambling St. for a three game series, beginning Friday, March 17.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
