UAPB Men Hoops Strong Start Top Mississippi Valley State In Conference Play

PINE BLUFF, AR —The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men’s basketball team shot 50 percent from deep on the way to an 88-72 win over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at home in front of a pack house Saturday at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

The Golden Lions had three players score in double figures, led by Kylen Milton, who had 23 points and six assists. Shaun Doss Jr. added 22 points and Caleb Stokes helped out with 11 points off of the bench.

UAPB grabbed 31 rebounds in Saturday’s game compared to Mississippi Valley State’s 23, led by seven boards from Trejon Ware.

The UAPB defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday’s game, forcing 20 Mississippi Valley State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Brahm Harris’ three steals led the way individually for the Golden Lions.

How It Happened

After jumping out to an 18-9 advantage, UAPB went on a 7-0 run with 9:52 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Stokes, to increase its lead to 25-9. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 39-27 advantage. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 39 points.

UAPB kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Milton’s layup, to grow the lead to 50-31 with 16:32 to go in the contest. The Delta Devils narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 88-72 win. UAPB capitalized on nine Mississippi Valley State turnovers in the period, collecting 13 points off those turnovers.
