UAPB Men Hoops Rolls Southern U. In SWAC Showdown To Extend Winning Streak To Five

PINE BLUFF, AR —SWAC leading scorer Shaun Doss Jr. wore his Superman Cape in “Super Hero Costume Night” and collected 23 points to help lead the UAPB men’s basketball team past the Southern Jaguars 62-55 at home Saturday. With the win, the Golden Lions remain unbeaten at home and extend their winning streak to five games.

Doss Jr. led the Golden Lions with 23 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ac Curry tacked on seven points, 11 rebounds and four steals and Ismael Plet helped out with eight points and six rebounds.

UAPB pulled down 40 rebounds in Saturday’s game compared to Southern’s 28, led by Curry’s 11 boards. The Golden Lions also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into 13 second chance points.

UAPB’s defense held Southern to only 34 percent shooting from the field, including 29.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Lions also limited Brion Whitley to 4-of-16 shooting in the game. The Jaguars did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points while UAPB cleared 28 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

UAPB started out the scoring by going on a 13-0 run, culminating in a three from Curry, to take an early lead with 15:41 left in the first half. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 36-24 advantage. UAPB capitalized on 13 Southern turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.

UAPB kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Brahm Harris’ three, to grow the lead to 58-46 with 7:20 to go in the contest. The Jaguars narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 62-55 win. UAPB took care of business in the paint, recording 14 of its 26 points in the lane.
