UAPB Football: Golden Lions Started Their Fall Camp With High Energy
PINE BLUFF, AR. – The 2024 edition of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football fall camp practice officially started on Tuesday night, as head coach Alonzo Hampton and his team held practice under the lights at Simmons Bank Field.
The Golden Lions had 105 players report to camp and allowed media to observe practice for the first fall practice, and during that time, it was a high-energy ordeal. In addition, players are getting the chance to experience the renovation of a new look locker room.
This practice marks the first step in UAPB’s goal to improve, compete hard every day, and vie for the SWAC title.
This is Hampton’s first full recruiting class, and he and his coaching staff are focused on turning the page from last year and concentrating on the 2024 season. The Golden Lions have bolstered their roster through the portal, adding skilled players and depth.
Hampton has added Tony Hull as the new offensive coordinator, and brought on board Tom Manley as the Running Backs/Special Teams Coordinator, Lawann Latson as the Wide Receivers coach, and Ty Gatson as the Tight Ends/Recruiting Coordinator for the Golden Lions. Hull’s air raid offense is expected to be a great fit for the team, as they have a talented group of speedy and tall receivers, as well as a strong pool of running backs, quarterbacks, offensive linemen, and tight ends.
“There were a lot of new people with big eyes, running around with high energy,” said Hampton. “You can tell a lot of the guys out here are very talented. As we get ready for the next 30 days and start putting everything together, we can see which group of new guys are ready. It was exciting to get everybody in one place, coach them on the good and the bad, but we just have to get better and put in the effort every time.”
The Golden Lions’ defensive coordinator, David Calloway, and his staff have made some key additions to the team. They have added size and toughness to the defensive line and have assembled a talented group of linebackers that could be one of the best in the conference. The secondary has also been improved with taller and faster players, making it a strong unit overall.
“The defense is always going to be flying around, that’s been the case everywhere I’ve been. They will come out with energy, sprint off the ball, and disrupt the offense at times. However, it’s a good thing because you want to be able to reign them in when necessary.”
Additionally, the Golden Lions will have the benefit of returning all-conference second-team punter Jeremy Baker, adding a few strong legs to the special team kicking game.
The Golden Lions opens the 2024 season with a 6:30 p.m. CT, contest against the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, AR., Aug. 29 on ESPNU and the UAPB Sports Network Radio, and the Deltaplex Radio 99.3 FM.
