UAPB FOOTBALL: Golden Lions Come Up Short to Alabama A&M

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas — Golden Lions fell 52-24 to Alabama A&M at home Saturday afternoon.

BJ Curry led all Golden Lions rushers with 59 yards and one touchdown in the contest, picking up 5.9 yards per carry. Za’Marion Webber also added 57 yards on the ground, averaging 8.1 yards per carry.

Mekhi Hagens’ most prolific target in the ballgame was JaVonnie Gibson, who caught six passes for 86 yards and one score.

Tayvon Hardwick showed out for the UAPB defense, collecting 11 tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one interception. Marcus Jones Jr. added eight tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one interception and Ja’Marlin Green had one forced fumble and one recovered fumble in the loss.

Both teams forced three turnovers in Saturday’s contest, with UAPB turning those takeaways into 14 points.

Defensively, UAPB held up fairly well against the Alabama A&M passing attack, holding the Bulldogs to 149 yards through the air. In part because of that stellar defense, UAPB receivers out-gained their Alabama A&M counterparts 172-149. The Golden Lions defense disrupted the Alabama A&M passing game on the way to recording two interceptions.

UAPB took a 3-0 lead over Alabama A&M after scoring the game’s first points on the opening drive of the game. Alabama A&M responded and went ahead 7-3 before the Golden Lions got on the scoreboard again on a 14-yard touchdown run from to retake the lead at 10-7.

Alabama A&M fought back to take a 52-17 lead before UAPB put a touchdown on the board to narrow the gap with :57 left in the fourth quarter and make it a 52-24 game. Both teams played the rest of the game without scoring.
