UAPB Baseball Swept by Prairie View A&M in Conference Series

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas —The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hang on and fell 4-3 to the Prairie View A&M Panthers Friday.

Sophomore Rocky King took the loss on the mound for UAPB.

Senior Kacy Higgins the way offensively for the Golden Lions, going 3-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and a walk. Sophomore Dante Leach furnished a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. UAPB got an RBI single from Leach, scoring Higgins from third base.

After the Panthers rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Golden Lions came back to retake the lead in the fourth inning. Higgins came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Golden Lions.

UAPB’s lead had evaporated once the seventh inning came around and turned into a 4-2 Prairie View A&M advantage, when the Golden Lions cut that deficit to 4-3. The Golden Lions scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Leach. The Golden Lions were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

Pine Bluff, AR.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Golden Lions fell to the Prairie View A&M Panthers 12-3 in game two Saturday at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.

Sophomore Damon Elarton got the ball to start for UAPB and took the loss.

Senior Kacy Higgins led the way offensively for the Golden Lions, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Sophomore JaKobi Jackson compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Carlos Velez also helped out, going 2-for-4 for UAPB with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 4-0, the Golden Lions first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. UAPB picked up three runs, two coming across on doubles from Higgins and Jackson. The Golden Lions were unable to get any closer, as Prairie View A&M added eight runs to their tally on the way to a 12-3 final.

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas –Junior Brandon Simon racked up four hits, but the Golden Lions fell to the Prairie View A&M Panthers 8-5 on Sunday at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.

Senior Trenton Ferguson got the ball to start for UAPB and took the loss. Sophomore Andrew Duran was a bright spot for the Golden Lions, coming out of the bullpen and throwing four innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits, with two walks and one strikeout.

In addition to his four hits, Simon had a double to lead the Golden Lions. Junior Karsten Vasquez compiled a standout performance as well, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Sophomore Lawrence Noble also contributed for UAPB, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a triple.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. UAPB plated two runs off of Prairie View A&M pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Vasquez.

The Golden Lions lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 7-2. UAPB managed to push across two runs in the inning, which tightened the Panthers lead to 7-4.

UAPB kept the Panthers off the board before narrowing the gap to 7-5 in the eighth. The Golden Lions added a run on Vasquez’s leadoff home run off senior Joshua Larzabal. The Golden Lions were unable to get any closer, as Prairie View A&M added one run to their tally on the way to an 8-5 final.
