UAPB Baseball Rallies From Tied Eighth Inning To Defeat Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. —The Golden Lions rallied from tied 5-5 in the eighth inning to win in exciting fashion, earning an 8-6 victory over the Alcorn State Braves Sunday.

Senior Trenton Ferguson got the win out of the bullpen for UAPB. The right-hander went one shutout inning without giving up a hit. Junior Brandon Little started the ballgame and went 5.2 innings, surrendering four runs, two earned, on seven hits, walking four and striking out nine.

In the batter’s box, the Golden Lions were paced by freshman Carlos Velez, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and four RBI.

Sophomore Mickyren Bentley compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions were trailing 4-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. UAPB’s offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a grand slam off the bat of Velez.

The Braves then tied the ballgame at five before the Golden Lions came back to reclaim their advantage in the ninth inning. which brought the Golden Lions lead to 8-5. Alcorn State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UAPB still held on for the 8-6 win.

The Golden Lions will be back in action at home this weekend for a three-game series against Grambling St.   First pitch is set for Friday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
