UAPB Baseball Breaks Through Late Tie for Game 1 Victory Against Jackson State

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas —The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team broke through after a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning to defeat the Jackson State Tigers 3-2 Friday.

Sophomore Andrew Duran (1-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for UAPB (3-7-1). The right-hander went nine innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out six.

Offensively, the Golden Lions were paced by Junior Braelin Hence, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a triple and a walk. Sophomore Dante Leach compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-5 with an RBI. Junior Karsten Vasquez also chipped in for UAPB, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Freshman Andre Greene came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB and get them on the board.

The Tigers then scored one run to retake their advantage heading into the fifth inning, when the Golden Lions responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. UAPB scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Leach, which evened the score at 2-2.

That 2-2 tie turned into a 3-2 UAPB lead in the seventh. The Golden Lions scored a run when freshman Lawrence Noble drew a walk from sophomore Jesse Caver that scored Hence. The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the game, as UAPB held on for the win.
