UAPB Volleyball Drops One; Ellis Named To All-Tournament Team

MEMPHIS, Tn. – Destiny Thomas led the Lady Lions with 10 kills in a losing effort to Arkansas State 3-1 (23-25, 20-25, 27-25, 16-25) Saturday morning to close out their play in the Tiger Brawl.

Zykia Jones and Zyonn Smith added to the kill total with nine and eight kills, respectively.

Nikole Akamine tallied a team-high 23 assists followed by Vanessa Collins adding 12 assists to help the Lady Lions.

Nyah Ellis was named to the Tiger Brawl All-Tournament Team after a stellar performance during the weekend. Ellis had a game-high 26 digs in the game against Arkansas State.

The team totaled 41 kills in the match.

UAPB will close out their non-conference play on Sept. 22 against Talladega College at home.

 

UAPB Soccer Falls at home against Tulsa

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff soccer team dropped a non-conference match to American Atlantic Conference foe Tulsa Hurricanes 2-0 Sunday evening at Pumphrey Soccer Complex.

In the first half, both teams battled back and forth before the Hurricanes scored with less than five minutes before intermission at the 40th min mark to take a (1-0) lead.

In the second half, Tulsa would add to their lead with another goal at the 58:43 mark for the Hurricanes off a penalty kick, increasing their lead (2-0) to seal the victory on the road.

“We don’t like to lose, but I thought we battled really tough, and ultimately we didn’t give up a goal,” said Head Coach Erik Solberg.

The Lady Lions were led by goalie Kailey Wehrmann, who finished the game with eight saves.

The Lady Lions will be back in action in Houston, Texas, to take on Houston Cougars Friday, September 24 at 7 pm.
